Learning Sessions 2015

We are happy to announce that both the tune learning and bodhrán learning sessions held at the KC Irish Center have joined the The Kansas City School of Irish Music.  These learning sessions, sometimes called “slow sessions” because the tempo is slower than full-on Irish sessions, are held on Tuesday evenings.  As with the learning sessions held throughout 2013, each session this year will run six weeks, with the sixth week “graduation session” held at a local pub.  The learning sessions provide a congenial place to learn new tunes and improve your ability to play well with others. The dates for 2015 are as follows:

    Learning Session          Dates

  • Winter 1                 1/27 – 3/3
  • Spring 1                  3/24 – 4/28
  • Spring 2                 5/19 – 6/23
  • Summer 1              7/14 – 8/18
  • Fall 1                       9/15 – 10/20
  • Winter 2                11/10 – 12/15

Each Tuesday the schedule will be as follows:

  • Beginning bodhrán                 5pm to 5:50
  • Beginning tune learning       6pm to 6:50
  • Advanced tune learning       7pm to 8pm

Descriptions:

  • The bodhrán learning session is a group ensemble class.  We discuss and demonstrate drum techniques, different rhythm patterns for accompanying the various types of tunes played at sessions around the world, preparing your drum for session playing, and basic care and feeding of the bodhrán.
  • The beginning tune learning session is a group ensemble class.  We will study and play tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Galicia, and England. All instruments are welcome, but students should be at the advanced beginner level or higher. The class will use recordings by the instructors, and tune handouts – which will be sent in advance via email and also be available online – and students will practice learning tunes by ear. The tempo will be a quarter to half session speed, but amenable to participant control. Depending on the make-up of the class, students will learn at least two tunes per meeting.
  • The advanced tune learning session is a group ensemble class.  We will study tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Galicia, and England. All instruments are welcome, but students should be at the intermediate level or higher. The class will use recordings by the instructors, and tune handouts – which will be sent in advance via email and also be available online – and students will practice learning tunes by ear. The tempo will be a half to three-quarter session speed, but amenable to participant control. Depending on the make-up of the class, students will learn at least two tunes per meeting and we will focus on putting together tune-sets (groups of two or more tunes strung together).

The cost is $70 per person for an entire six-week session ($60 for members of the KC Irish Center).
